How To Compete

Welcome to the National Vocabulary Championship's Educator Page. Whether you are a current NVC Coach, a teacher interested in learning more about the program or want free resources to use in your classroom, this is the place for you.

Mission Statement
GSN, in partnership with The Princeton Review, presents the National Vocabulary Championship (NVC). The NVC is an initiative that aims to inspire students to expand their vocabularies and narrow the achievement gap. The program offers free educational resources, creates spirited competition through testing and game play, and awards more than $100,000 annually in college tuition and other prizes.

There are two ways to enter the competition:

1) NVC National Qualifying Competition - Eligible students nationwide may take the National Qualifying Exam. Top scorers from the National Qualifying Exam will be invited to take the regional exam at a Princeton Review testing location, and 42 finalists from the National Qualifying Competition will advance to the NVC Finals.

2) NVC Citywide Championships - Eligible students who attend a school that has elected to become an NVC participating school and that is located within the city or region in which a Citywide Championship will be held (i.e., Detroit, Nashville, New York City, Northeast Ohio, Philadelphia, Pittsburgh, Sacramento and St. Louis) can take the In-School Qualifying Exam for an opportunity to advance to their local Citywide Championship. Each grand prize winner of the Citywide Championships (eight winners total) will receive $5,000 toward college tuition and will advance to the NVC Finals.

A total of 50 finalists will be flown to the National Vocabulary Championship Finals in Los Angeles, California in Spring 2008 to compete for $40,000 toward college tuition and the title of 2008 National Vocabulary Champion.
